Course aims:

To obtain knowledge and skills concerning fabrication of fixed prosthetic restorations. To obtain knowledge and skills regarding patient’s examination, diagnostic, pretreatment, selection of fixed restorations in various prosthetic conditions. To obtain knowledge and skills in the area of fixed prosthetic materials science, co-operation between dental clinic and dental laboratory, laboratory procedures in fixed restorations fabrication.

105 hours 5th semester: lectures- 15 hours, seminars – 35 hours, workshops- 55 hours

Learning activities and teaching methods:

The 5th semester prosthodontics course consist of lectures, seminars and workshops. The seminars are supported with multimedia presentations and laboratory demonstration. Preclinical classes with phantom models relate to fixed prosthetic restorations. Demonstrations include teeth preparation

for various intra and extracoronal restorations and laboratory procedures. Students prepare phantom teeth and do some laboratory stages of fixed restorations fabrication.

Seminars

1. Classification of partially edentulous arches. Classification of dental prostheses. Principles of tooth preparation for fixed partial dentures.

2. Types of impressions. Impression making.

3. Occlusal registrations, articulators.

4. Repetition of prosthetic materials.

5. Tooth preparation and fabrication of full metal crowns.

6. Tooth preparation and fabrication of all-ceramic crowns.

7. Tooth preparation and fabrication of metal-ceramic crowns.

8. Luting agents.

9. Provisional restorations.

10. Tooth preparation and fabrication of inlays and onlays.

11. Laminate veneers.

12. Tooth preparation and fabrication of custom cast dowels.

13. Prefabricated posts.

14. Tooth preparation and fabrication of fixed bridge.

15. Resin-retained FPD’s.

1. Introduction to prosthetic dentistry. Aims of prosthodontic treatment.

2. Anamnesis and clinical examination. Treatment planning and mouth preparation.

3. Prosthetic crowns –clinical procedures.

4. Prosthetic crowns – laboratory procedures.

5. Zirconia based restorations.

6. Restoration of the endodontically treated tooth

7. Fixed partial dentures – bridges.

Assessment methods and criteria:

To be credited every student of the 6-th semester shall comply with all of the following requirements:

1. Students are required to be present during all scheduled hours (students returning from absences will need to complete make-up class)

2. Students are required to obtain at least 42 points (60%) on repetition quizzes (marks: failed- 0 points, sufficient – 3 points, good – 4 points, excellent – 5 points). There are total number of 14 quizzes in 6-th semester. Only two failed quizzes can be retaken.

3. Students are required to accomplish preclinical and laboratory procedures :

· impression taking

· casts pouring

· casts articulation

· tooth preparation for metal crown and pattern waxing

· tooth preparation for PFM crown

· tooth preparation for all-ceramic crown

· interim crown fabrication

· tooth preparation for MOD onlay

· tooth preparation for ceramic veneer

· post and core pattern fabrication

· tooth preparation for prosthetic bridge and pattern waxing

4. Students are required to pass the final written test.
